Boat on a lake
A Poem from a Slam Poetry Unit

The Lake

picture a lake of fire so

bright and wrought with flame

nothing passes

The vivid heat knows no movement of

flowing freeness of streams or rivers

the impasse is real

come chase the sirens that call and beckon

but in that moment the world stands still

how knowledge cunning and tact fail me now

I can see, I can hear, I can speak

yet no more are these powers to sustain me

there could be another way?

I could go back the way I came?

that's an uphill battle

how do I dare move you?

time mocks me as I wait pondering my path

the dream of a finish is too arduous to fathom

do I dare seek the path untraveled

the naked flame raw and savage

determination is like a beacon

calling to me and

as the ash falls I may be burned

but currents flow again.
